Deceased Name: Nancy Kaufman, 64; was teacher for 40 years

Everyone who came in contact with her said Nancy Lee Kaufman knew how to bring out the best in her students.

"She recognized, used, practiced the self-esteem theory probably 25 years before it became a buzzword," said her husband, Clayton. "Many years ago, she was talking about how important self-esteem is, with her children and her niece and her husband."

Kaufman, 64, taught in Minneapolis, St. Louis Park and Edina schools over 40 years. "Retirement wasn't in her vocabulary," her husband said.

She suffered a heart attack Jan. 3 and never regained consciousness, he said. She died Friday at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.

Kaufman was born and raised in Duluth, graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in sociology, then continued on for a teaching degree. Her career choice was probably influenced by the fact that her mother and many of her friends were teachers, her husband said, and she excelled at it.

She starting teaching at Emerson and Clay elementary schools in Minneapolis. After taking a break to raise her own three children, she taught a few years at Blake School in Minneapolis, a year in Edina and then at St. Louis Park.

She was certified as a special education teacher. For a year or two, she also taught English as a second language.

Kaufman and her husband traveled a lot. She played tennis and exercised regularly.

Besides her husband, she is survived by sons Dixon, of Chicago; Douglas, of Bloomington, and Dan, of Rochester, Minn., and one grandson.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Temple Israel, 2324 Emerson Av. S., Minneapolis. Shiva will be held Monday at 8236 Westwood Hills Curve, St. Louis Park. Memorials to the Minnesota Medical Foundation are suggested. Arrangements are by Hodroff & Sons.
